Majjistral Park

Majjistral Park is a nature reserve located in Mellieha, Malta. The geographical area includes the coastal area from Golden Bay to Il-Prajjet and Ix- Xagħra l-Ħamra. It was declared a national park on the Malta Government Gazette in September 2007. The park is named after the region or the northwest wind.

The park includes a 6-kilometer (3.7 mi) stretch of protected coastline, and is part of a larger special area of conservation of international importance within the Natura 2000 network of sites under the EU Habitats Directive. It has many historical and archaeological sites identified in studies commissioned by the Malta Tourism Authority.

The Maltese islands are inhabited by a large number of wild native plants. Some of the plants in this park are endemic, i.e. found only in the Maltese islands, sub-endemic (found in a few other Mediterranean regions), while other plants are scarce, localized or rare. It is possible to observe in the park the local environment, which is represented by a wide range of plants present in different habitats such as sand dunes, cliffs, rocky steppes and clay slopes, temporary freshwater rock pools and shrubby maquis.

The flowering period is the best time to observe most of the species present in the park. The majority of them, extends from late winter to spring. Plants are an integral part of our heritage and therefore must be preserved and protected through a constant balance between human presence and nature protection.
