Due to the ever-increasing population in Mellieħa, it was necessary to build a larger parish church. After acquiring a plot of land, close to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa, the new church started to be built, and after 14 years it was completed in 1897. The parishioners made sure that they would continue to be generous towards their new church. The paintings of the main altar and the side altars are the works of the best Maltese artists of the early 20th century, namely; Giuseppe Cali, Lazzaro Pisani and Gianni Vella amongst others.
The parish is dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady, also known as Our Lady of Victory. The titular painting shows the victory of the Maltese and the Knights of St John against the invading Ottoman troops in 1565. The paintings show a knight receiving a palm frond from an angel, as a symbol of martyrdom. The upper part of the painting shows a young Mary sitting on the lap of St Anne, who is accompanied by St Joachim.
The façade of the church is dominated by two decorated spires. One can notice a number of statues at the upper part of the façade. Two other stone statues flank the main statue of Christ the King, which dominates the facade. The belfries are also decorated with statues. The feast day is celebrated on the 8 of September, which is also a National Holiday in Malta. The wooden titular statue of Our Lady is the work of a Maltese sculptor of the 19th century.
